netAirspace.com Launched
With great pleasure, I can announce the launch of www.netAirspace.com
Homepage and database are currently in beta status, and there still is a lot to fix, add and do in general. But anyway – the site is up, the database is there, so sign up for a free account and start uploading your aviation photos still today!
All photos that are aviation-related will be accepted. We will not reject any photos on quality grounds. Our screeners will review your photos only after they were already added to the database, and select the outstanding ones for display on the homepage. But all other photos will remain in the database as well and can be shared with other members or posted on our forums.
Well over a year of work and preparations went into the project. And we’re far from being ready yet. In fact, we have only just begun. I’m looking forward to seeing you over at www.netAirspace.com!

Hacker Attack Averted
During the past 48 hours, my website was attacked by hackers. They used a security leak in a thumbnail module (timthumb.php) to gain control over the site and embed scripts from a Russian server. These would most likely have embedded ads to the site. It did not work, though.
Thanks to the help from my mate Ed, the attack was discovered and averted. This was not easy, as several scripts on the server had been manipulated. But we were able to remove them and the site is now clean and safe again. From what I can tell, no harm has been done.
This was not a dedicated attack on my site, but a global attack on all websites using WordPress. Security forums are abuzz with this.
If you run WordPress and need help with checking or cleaning your site, please do contact me. I know how to get rid of this problem, and prevent similar attacks in the future. You will find my contact details in the “About” section.
Chuck, Is That You?

I guess many of you are into aviation, just like myself. If you are also into aviation-themed humor, then take a look at Chicken Wings Comics by Michael and Stefan Strasser.
New strips are posted there every few days, so check the site regularly. I also added it to the Links section, along with several new photographer websites that you may also want to take a look at.
Relaunch
As you probably noticed, the site has a new design.
I tried another theme first, but was not totally happy with the options it offered for creating galleries. So I tried another one, and ended up with this one.
There still is a lot to do, especially in the galleries, that are still quite empty. I have to re-upload all shots for that, though, so it will take some time until all galleries and pictures will be up.
In the meantime, I will keep adding new pictures as well. And for every new picture, I will make a post here in the “Latest” section (that also still has the old RSS feed), so that you can follow all the updates.
Finally, I’d like to ask you for some input – should I stick with all monochrome shots on the front page? Or should I add some color there? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
SXM – Qatar Airways (Qatar Amiri Flight), Airbus A340-500
Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
Qatar Airways (Qatar Amiri Flight), Airbus A340-541, A7-HHH.
Probably the catch of the trip. We were surprised to see a Qatar A310 sitting on the gate when we arrived the day before. It departed later that day (pics will follow). But imagine our surprise when a day later, this A345 showed up. Seen here slowing down after landing, and soon after backtracking on the runway, towards the terminal. The captain had just spotted us in the second photo.

Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
Air Caraibes, Airbus A330-323X, F-GOTO (top) / F-ORLY (bottom).
Air Caraibes’ beautiful color scheme resonates wonderfully with the blue sky of the Caribbean.

Air France, Airbus A340-313X, F-GLZP.
Small compilation of F-GLZP. Seen here approaching SXM, passing over Maho Beach, and then leaving again later on.

Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
US Airways, Boeing 757-2B7, N939UW.
Pure SXM: a Cactus 752 passing low ower Maho Beach, getting everyone excited – me certainly included. The new 15-85mm lens sure came in handy here.
SXM – Caribbean Airlines, Boeing 737-800
Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
Caribbean Airlines, Boeing 737-8Q8, 9Y-KIN.
Some more pictures from the Mary’s Boon Hotel & Resort. 9Y-KIN, seen here after arrival, turning around on the runway right in front of us, and then departing again exactly one hour later. The aircraft is sporting Air Jamaica logos as Caribbean Airlines acquired Air Jamaica in 2010.
Philipsburg
Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
View across the Philipsburg Bay, towards Fort Amsterdam. When I see such typical postcard motives, I usually suspect that the photographer has juiced up the colors. Rest assured that this did not happen here. The colors on this island, especially the turqoise of the water, are just amazing.
Socializing
As you may have noted, I have added connections to some social networks to the site. At the top of each post, you will find a Facebook “Like” button, and at the bottom are buttons to share it on Facebook, Twitter or by e-mail.
Personally, I am not a huge fan of these buttons, but I guess connecting a website / blog to the major social networks is a must these days. And of course, I do appreciate if you share my photos on your Facebook, or any other social networks.
The bug that Facebook connects the wrong pictures with wall posts should be fixed as well. If you use Firefox with the NoScript add-on, you will probably receive a “click-jacking” alert. This is because the button on this website directly triggers a function on another website (Facebook). Such behavior can sometimes be encountered on malicious websites, but rest assured that the button here has no other function than to “Like” the respective photo on Facebook.
If you would like me to add connections to other social networks, please drop me a message and I will see what I can do.
SXM – WestJet, Boeing 737-700
Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
WestJet, Boeing 737-76N, C-FJWS.
SXM is much more than Maho Beach. As spectacular as the well-known photos of heavies flying only a few feet above the beach certainly are, but after a few days, I started to like the departure shots even better. The Mary’s Boon Hotel & Resort offers a stunning view, both on runway operations and departures.
Many more SXM photos are still to follow – Maho Beach, departures, runway shots and photos of the island itself. Stay tuned!
SXM – JetBlue, Airbus A320
Philipsburg / St. Maarten, Princess Juliana Airport (SXM / TNCM), Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
JetBlue Airways, Airbus A320-232, N639JB.
Maho Beach. The most awesome place in the world – at least if you are a plane spotter
St. Maarten
Simpson Bay, St. Maarten, Lesser Antilles. April 2011.
Paradise.
What a stunningly beautiful island. I was blessed to visit a few amazing places in this world already, but none left me as breathless as St. Maarten did. A true gem in the Caribbean. A paradise, not only for plane spotters. But, of course, especially for them.
I have returned with a ton of pictures, so please expect regular updates again. Those who know St. Maarten will already guess that many of these pictures include aircraft again, but I’ve got quite a few of the island as well. Like this one, taken from the Mary’s Boon Hotel & Resort, where I had a wonderful time along with good friends.
More to follow soon.
Bahrain Amiri Flight, Boeing 747SP
Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (HAM / EDDH), Germany. March 2011.
Bahrain Amiri Flight, Boeing 747SP-Z5, A9C-HAK.
Another day at the airport, another interesting bird. Shame that the sun vanished behind a cloud some 15 minutes before this guest from Bahrain arrived.
Air France, Airbus A380
Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (HAM / EDDH), Germany. March 2011.
Air France, Airbus A380-861, F-WWAN (F-HPJE).
Two good reasons to go to the airport today, after 4 months of abstinence from spotting. First, new gear had to be tested. And second, this AF A380 (c/n 052) performing a low approach at Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel during a test flight could not return un-photographed to Finkenwerder.
Spotting Highlights 2010 – Miami & Florida
My spotting highlights from 2010, Volume 2 – Miami & Florida.
In March 2010, I spent a week in Florida. Mostly around Miami, but my host Victor also took me to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Opa-Locka (OPF), plus we visited the Air Fest at Mac Dill Air Force Base (MCF) in Tampa. It was an awesome week, even though the Space Shuttle launch we wanted to watch was postponed.
It was really difficult to pick only 16 shots – I guess I could easily fill a second and third collage. As you can see from this one, MIA is a three-holer heaven.
From left to right, top to bottom:
01: 18 Mar, FLL, Capital Cargo International Airlines, Boeing 727-200/Adv, N815EA

I hope you enjoyed the shots. The final collage with highlights from London and the UK will follow soon.
Spotting Highlights 2010 – Hamburg
My spotting highlights from 2010, Volume 1 – my home airport, Hamburg.
Except for the Antonov and the Avro, all photos were taken under lousy cold conditions. But especially in the beginning of the year, I found some of the best light I ever had while spotting. Sunshine and a snow-covered ground led to almost studio-like conditions.
From left to right, top to bottom:
01: 24 Jan, Iran Air, Boeing 747SP, EP-IAD – when the IR SP wasn’t banned from Europe yet.
02: 16 Feb, Emirates, Boeing 777-300ER, A6-EBW – first day with awesome light
03: 16 Feb, Air Berlin, Boeing 737-700, D-AHXF – sun + snow = great conditions
04: 16 Feb, AeroVis Airlines, Antonov An-12, UR-CEZ – the special visitor of the day
05: 06 Mar, SunExpress, Boeing 737-800, TC-SNJ – best light I ever got while spotting
06: 07 Mar, Emirates, Boeing 777-300ER, A6-EBW – same aircraft as in #02
07: 07 Mar, TAP Portugal, Airbus A320-200, CS-TNL – colour flash no. 1
08: 07 Mar, TUIfly, Boeing 737-800, D-AHFT – colour flash no. 2
09: 07 Mar, Iran Air, Airbus A300-600, EP-IBD – regular visitor in HAM
10: 09 Apr, ADB, Antonov An-225 Mriya, UR-82060 – the absolute highlight of the year
11: 10 Apr, ADB, Antonov An-225 Mriya, UR-82060 – thousands gathered around the airport
12: 10 Apr, ADB, Antonov An-225 Mriya, UR-82060 – a bird escorting the Mriya
13: 25 Apr, Brussels Airlines, BAE Avro 146 RJ100, OO-DWD – I just like the insect look
14: 17 Oct, Air Berlin, Boeing 737-800, D-ABBZ – wonderful evening light
15: 17 Oct, Air Berlin, Airbus A321, D-ALSC – climbing out in front of the moon
16: 17 Oct, TUIfly, Boeing 737-800, D-ATUG – colour flash no. 3
I hope you enjoyed the highlights. Two more collages will follow soon, one from my trip to Miami in March, and one from my many trips to London and Manchester. Also, I will see to upload all shots from the collages that I haven’t uploaded yet. Happy spotting for 2011!
Seat with a View
Chania, Crete. May 2008.
Still unsure what to do in 2011, in terms of photography. Broadening my horizon by trying something new – like street or people photography? Delving deeper into a certain subject – like monochrome? Or keeping it real by focusing on aviation photography?
Anyway, as a start, here’s a rework of an older shot. To be honest, I had expected a little more from it. But now that it’s ready, I guess I can as well upload it.
I wish you all a wonderful 2011, and thanks for still following my site, despite the sporadic updates.
